Choose the Right Actuator With These Design Resources
By John Fenske on February 11, 2025
Specifying the right electric linear actuator for your application can turn into an overwhelming process if you don’t rely on available tools and resources. In a previous blog post, we provided steps for specifying engineered-to-order actuators to optimize your overall design. But we have even more design resources available that will help you find the actuator that fits your needs. You can find our tools on our design tool page.
Sizing Software
Our online sizing software, SizeIt 3.0, helps you quickly and easily size an electrical linear actuator according to your application requirements. Simply input your motion profile (speeds, accelerations, forces) and required lifespan, and SizeIt will automatically determine which actuators are best suited for you.
Your Motor Here
To make motor mounting for your traditional style electric linear actuator easy and seamless, we designed the Your Motor Here (YMH) tool. Using this tool, you can select from a wide range of standard motors and match them to our actuators. The resulting output displays a motor-to-actuator fit that works for your application.
Drive Integration Tool
Tolomatic’s Drive Integration Tool (DIT) ensures that you have the right drive and cable connections, as well as all of the data required to commission your integrated servo linear actuator. DIT is useful if you already have a preferred drive or if you are looking for one compatible with your servo linear actuator.
Product Catalog
Look through our product catalog featuring a broad range of electric linear actuators. Some of our linear actuators include:
- RSA traditional rod-style actuators ideal for hydraulic replacement.
- RSH hygienic actuators that are excellent for pharmaceutical and food and beverage applications.
- IMA integrated actuators that offer a compact and rigid design for applications requiring high power density in small spaces.
- IMA-S integrated actuators that combine features of the IMA with stainless steel construction for hygienic applications.
We also offer an online CAD library so you can see how an actuator fits into your design.
Engineering Assistance
Our engineers are ready to work with you to ensure that you get the optimal electric linear actuator for your design. We firmly believe in collaboration as one of the best strategies to achieve success, so feel free to ask an engineer.
Engineered-to-Order Designs
Many applications have specialized requirements, so don’t force an off-the-shelf model into your design if it requires you to make concessions for performance or lifespan — this can end up costing you more down the road. Instead, it’s actually more cost-effective to work with your provider to generate a design that’s optimized for your application. Collaborating with your actuator provider also ensures you get your actuators within your schedule and budget.
Tolomatic actuators are built-to-order, ensuring your actuator delivers on all fronts including:
- Motion requirements
- Mounting and physical fit
- Environmental protection
- Compatibility with controls
- Supply chain and project schedule
